Visible Empire is the story of a single sweltering summer, and of the promise and hope that remains in the wake of crisis. It's the story of a husband and wife-Robert and Lily-who don't truly come to understand each other and their love, until their city's chaos drives them to clarity.

A year before her death, elderly Laura Bridgman meets a busy-handed child named Helen Keller.   Visible Empire is a play on the name of the KKK, The Invisible Empire, implying that the upper classes of Atlanta in were just as racist as the invisible members of the infamous white supremacist group that grew out of the Civil War in the South/5(42).
